JESÚS A. CABRERA, MD, PhD (2012-2014)

Dr. Jesús A. Cabrera is currently working at Smiths Medical as a Senior Principal Architect in Airway Research and Development. Dr. Cabrera was an Innovation Fellow from August 2012 through June 2014 as a member of the fifth and sixth Innovation classes. As an Innovation Fellow, Dr. Cabrera was a part of teams that submitted and published patents through the USPTO and PCT. In his first year, these teams were able to gain access to greater than $30,000 from strategic partners to develop their concepts and build prototypes that were tested in animal, tissue and cellular models-for this work, the Innovation Fellows from the fifth class and Boston Scientific were awarded the Tekne Award for Innovative Collaboration in 2013. Significantly, in his second year, he partnered with two other Innovation Fellows and was Principal Investigator in two UMN grants that he authored that raised $77,500 in research and development funds from the Venture Center and the Center of Translational Science Institute, in support of a technology that may lead to a potential start-up company to be licensed from the University of Minnesota.

Prior to his tenure in the Fellowship, Dr. Cabrera was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Minnesota and was a senior author in 14 publications, 3 book chapters and more than 20 peer reviewed abstracts and was given the honor to present his work at national meetings. Due to this work, the University of Minnesota has identified Dr. Cabrera as an expert in cardiac mitochondrial physiology and pulmonary vascular regulation.

Dr. Cabrera graduated from the University California, Santa Cruz, with his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology and from the University of Michigan Medical School with his Doctorate Degrees in Medicine and Philosophy. Jesús completed his clinical anesthesia residency in the Department of Anesthesia from the University of Minnesota with an additional Clinical Fellowship year in Cancer Pain Management.
