ALAN W. JOHNSON, MD, MS (2012-2013)
Alan W. Johnson is a board certified Otolaryngologist – Head & Neck Surgeon. Prior to pursuing a surgical career, he studied chemical engineering at Northwestern University where he earned a bachelor's degree. He pursued innovation training further through Northwestern’s cooperative engineering program where he worked at Procter & Gamble’s Health Care Research Center. There he assisted in consumer medical product development. His experiences spurred him to pursue a medical career with the goal to synergize his medicine and engineering passions.
Medical school at the University of Minnesota offered a number of experiences to sharpen his interests in medical innovation and surgery. He interned with Medtronic where he helped search for new solutions to obstructive sleep apnea. He was an original founder of the CLARION interprofessional case competition – an event focused on medical errors which has grown into a national intercollegiate competition. Further, assisting in the university’s anatomy lab, he primed himself for his future surgical training. These experiences further crystallized his interests in collaboration, research, and the pursuit of new solutions in health care.
In residency, Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery was a natural fit as it combined his interests in surgery, anatomy, and the use of technology to improve health. Having completed his Otolaryngology residency, master's degree, and boards, he seeks to merge his innovation, engineering, and surgical backgrounds into a hybrid career.
Outside of work and study, Dr. Johnson enjoys spending time with his wife, Katy, and sons, Elliot and Evan. He is commonly found biking, swimming, and enjoying Minnesota’s lake country with them.
